Why is evolution taught as a true fact?
So, this guy wrote the most annoying article to the editor of my local paper. Here it is.
“To the Editor:
I noticed that many public school science textbooks teach evolution as the only way that we could have got here. Why is that? Why is it that it is the only theory used? Most people (about 53 percent) don’t even believe the evolution theory (only 10 percent or less believe it and what is taught in schools). Why then is it taught as fact to children in our schools?
One scientist collects the textbooks used in science classes and found that a surprising amount of information used to support the theory was disproved many years ago (see the booklet “Are You Being Brainwashed?”). Well then, it is down right wrong to keep teaching these lies in schools.
Look at what one man said about science textbooks: “In the years after Darwin, his advocates hoped to find predictable progressions. In general, these have not been found – yet the optimism has died hard, and some pure fantasy has crept into textbooks.” – Raup, David M., “Evolution and the Fossil Record,” Science, vol. 213 (July 1981) p. 289.
Notice his last statement “…some pure fantasy has crept into textbooks.”
If this is true, let’s at least tell students the truth. Please don’t think I’m against teachers or schools. I only want textbooks to not be one-sided and use false information. We should remove all untrue content in our public schools. Why would anyone want to teach lies to children anyway?”
[Then he announces his organization and name, as if it were an advertisement.]
First of all, I think this guy is an idiot. Where did he get his percentages for information? 53% disagree? Is that according to him or to some accredited institution? (If his mental institution is even accredited, ha-ha.) Later in his letter, he quotes some guy who is probably a creationist such as himself, which is one-sided, too. The guy he quotes just says what he wants to be said, and has no evidence. It’s like if I quoted my math teacher on her opinion on food, and then I use it as evidence for which foods are high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. She’s not qualified to be quoted on something as that. Lastly, he states that he doesn’t want our schools to be one-sided, yet he’d happily go along with “false” information being removed and the side being tilted in his favor. He’s such a crack head.
So, I responded in my own way. After reading the paper right after school, I quickly wrote a letter to the editor before going to work. I delivered it, and hopefully I’ll see it in the paper tomorrow.
“To the Editor:
I’m a local student, and I recently noticed a letter to the editor on evolution being taught in schools. It was quite a timely topic – considering that we have begun discussions on this subject in the classroom. I figured many needed a second opinion on the idea.
It is true that evolution is being taught in the classroom, and creation science is not. There are many facets to this happening, but people need to understand why before they criticize the secularism in our school systems. From my understanding, creation science – also known as “Intelligent Design” – is a theory of being designed by a more complex being than ourselves, typically a deity. This is a valid theory, as are many others; however, it has yet to be proven to be scientific.
First of all, please do not take this as a “bashing” of anyone’s opinions, but creation science has yet to prove itself as an actual science. Evolution is based on scientific facts – such as the fossil record, tectonic theory, etc. – that can be tested with physical, unchanging evidence. Creation science, on the other hand, cannot.
The theory that we arrived on Earth through divine means cannot be tested scientifically. You can form a hypothesis, but you cannot test it. For example, people in the past have tried to test praying for victims of cancer. While some became well, others passed away. This was not a result of praying or lack thereof, but rather it was merely seen as God’s will, and there is nothing another person can do about it. Because results of experiments such as these are inconclusive, they cannot successfully be tested.
As for evolution, you are not forced in any way to believe in it. It is a theory, and in science (and reality), the words fact and theory can both describe the same thing. Evolution shall always remain a theory because science is always willing to consider new ideas that seem credible; it’s the nature of the business. So, until creation design can prove that it is more than just faith and that it is an actual science, it will continue to remain outside science classrooms.”
